School Choice / Part 4

Image
-------------------------  ------------------------    In modern day, the human race continues to advance technology, medicine, and machinery used in a multitude of departments. As the variety of careers increase, there is a demand for schools and programs focusing on these departments. Commercialization for these schools have increased over time and they are now seen in public transportation, streaming platforms, and television.  As society explores the vast number of options open for enrollment around America, we are able to choose a school that caters to our values and interests. In turn, it leaves resources and governmental funds to public schools in the community.      In a study called  How Does School Choice Affect Public Schools Funding and Resources  conducted by Ed Choice, the article states "School choice programs affect public schools' funding and resources in the same way they're affected when a student l...

Separate and Unequal / Part 3

Image
Is separate but equal a viable option in education today?       Despite the challenges faced by people of color back in the day, I believe the idea of 'separate but equal' is a possible option. To ensure safety while receiving a good education, keeping people separate in conservative states could be beneficial. However, as a person who grew up in Jersey City, I enjoy the idea of mixing everyone together for a diverse community. Jersey City is known as one of the most diverse cities in the country and the benefits are apparent. I have grown up open-minded and mindful of other people, their traditions, and cultural backgrounds. Despite this observation and personal experience, I do understand the violence and danger others face in states that supported racial separation and slavery.      Although this did not happen in present day, situations similar to these encounters can continue to this day. In School: The Story of American Public Educati...

Weighing Out Education in America / Part 2

Image
Weighing Out Education in America      When reviewing part two of School: The Story of American Public Education, the author explains the transition immigrants, and children of immigrant parents, endured as they were enrolled into public schools. Society found it useful and "appropriate" to implement school into their lives, as it would teach them the ways of being "American". They believed it would allow them to become educated, literate, and able to participate in social/political events as they learned about the country's system. However, due to the language barrier and the upbringing in their birth country, many students would fall behind and struggle to fully understand the lessons being taught in public schools. As a result, teachers began to integrate SAT exams in hopes of understanding the education level of the children, along with trying to understand which career path w...

Module One: The Significancy of Education

I have always been interested in understanding the history of communities, countries, and systems that are still around to this day. While reading chapter one of School , the author discussed the battles faced when creating an established education system. From the early 16th century, society in England began to realize the significance of education during one's childhood, but they were concerned about what subject children would study. According to Doctor of Philosophy Peter Gray, "Much of the impetus for universal education came from the emerging Protestant religions... Luther and other leaders of the Reformation promoted public education as Christian duty..." (Gray, "A Brief History of Education"). The Lutheran church was in charge of running schools as Martin Luther declared that each person must understand the Scriptures to earn their salvation. As a result, Americans began to follow in the footsteps of England and Germany during the 17th century....

Introducing Me

Image
Welcome to my comfort zone, The Cozy Corner      My name is Roxana Martinez, I am a Jersey City native with parents from Central American countries, and I am currently a senior in Graphic Design. I have always seen myself as the black sheep, as well as the 'baby' of the family. I am the youngest of my siblings, but there are times when my siblings depend on me for emotional support. There will always be hardships and challenges that test your mental strength to see if you will give up or not... Unfortunately I was faced with multiple issues at a very young age. In those moments, I hoped for compassion, comfort, and a shoulder to cry on and as a result, I tried to provide support and love for those I truly care about.       Moving away from what people would deem a tough topic, I am interested in  weightlifting, animals, a large array of music, and unraveling mysteries. As a young girl growing up, I enjoyed reading R.L. Stine’s ‘ Goosebumps’ serie...
