Introducing Me
Welcome to my comfort zone,
The Cozy Corner
My name is Roxana Martinez, I am a Jersey City native with parents from Central American countries, and I am currently a senior in Graphic Design. I have always seen myself as the black sheep, as well as the 'baby' of the family. I am the youngest of my siblings, but there are times when my siblings depend on me for emotional support. There will always be hardships and challenges that test your mental strength to see if you will give up or not... Unfortunately I was faced with multiple issues at a very young age. In those moments, I hoped for compassion, comfort, and a shoulder to cry on and as a result, I tried to provide support and love for those I truly care about.
Moving away from what people would deem a tough topic, I am interested in weightlifting, animals, a large array of music, and unraveling mysteries. As a young girl growing up, I enjoyed reading R.L. Stine’s ‘Goosebumps’ series and truly looked forward to collecting as many as I could find. The suspense and the use of vivid descriptions to create mental pictures fascinated me, further developing my interest in art. I remember the excitement I felt when attending the Book Fair in elementary school and viewing all of the publications on display. I was encouraged to continue reading by the school librarian and teachers, but I was pushed away from reading ‘Goosebumps’ books by my parents as they feared I would suffer from nightmares. After this intervention, I began to read novels that taught me life lessons, morals, and different perspectives in life.
From reading ‘Rules’ by Cynthia Lord in my elementary school library to reading ‘Hunger’ by Roxane Gay for a college course, the novels I dove deep into helped shape my mental and emotional development, as well as teaching me to unravel the bigger picture to truly understand a deeper meaning. Despite my strong love for novels and collecting books in the past, I feel that I have drifted away from reading but I would like to integrate more reading time into my day. Though I am not reading much at this point in life, I am informing myself through documentaries and videos. I am interested in crime investigations and documentaries discussing the moments leading up to a turning point. I have always been fascinated with hearing someone’s past, their perspective on life, and the wisdom that they have gained either through experience or through someone they look up to.
I have learned to utilize a journal to track my mental progress and to record moments in life that I can look back to, such as breakthroughs and moments of gratitude. I have been encouraged to do so by my friends and society as it helps release unwanted feelings and it can resemble a deep breath of fresh air. Having a book to express my emotions and to write down my racing thoughts aids with mental block and finding a solution to possible issues.
